Merseyside Violence Reduction Partnership
Diversionary Sports and Arts Activities for 300 young people.
Over 300 young people took part in Sports and Arts sessions in Parr, St Helens Town Centre, Thatto Heath and Prescot. Arts sessions included Graffiti sessions with a professional Graffiti Artist, Creative Writing with a local children’s author and Drama sessions with a local drama teacher and actress. Sports sessions included boxing, football, rugby, wrestling, gym sessions and dodgeball sessions in community hubs across the borough.
The sessions helped to divert young people male and female) away from unwanted behaviours, Anti-Social Behaviours and Crime. Workshops were also delivered to groups of young people and 30 of the hardest to reach young people were mentored during and after the 3-month project to help improve their well-being, confidence, self-esteem, to help improve school attendance, attainment behaviour in school.

Delivery of healthy relationship workshops to 1000 young girls and production of three short film clips for social media.
People Empowered CIC worked with two St Helens High Schools and two primary schools serving challenged areas, and two community hubs to deliver healthy relationship workshops to over 1000 young women and girls. The workshops explored narratives of unhealthy relationships with small groups using real-life examples and audio clips from women who had survived abusive relationships.
In one school weekly drama workshops were used to further explore the topic with a small group of young people. Then a drama teacher and actresses were employed to work with a professional filmmaker to produce 3 short clips for social media identifying unhealthy behaviour including, physical abuse, coerciveness and controlling behaviours.

Empowering workshops to young people focussing upon resilience and wellbeing.
We worked with community groups and hubs to deliver workshops that supported young people to think about and develop their own well-being practices for managing the stresses of modern life after Covid.Wellbeing workshops for children and young people in challenged areas
We delivered 20 workshops in Parr, Thatto Heath, Sutton, Prescot, and St Helens funded in part by an award by the Warburtons Foundation. Topics ranged from identifying symptoms of poor mental health in friends to healthy relationships and mindset. The attendance at the sessions ranged between 10 and 30 participants per session, with over 300 young people attending in total.Young People’s Graffiti Workshops and a mural for a local community Hub
We delivered workshops in community hubs to young people aged 11 to 20 years using graffiti art as a medium to support the work of Stop Loan Sharks Now – England. The workshops were in deprived areas and the final sessions included the delivery of a bespoke mural that will be displayed at Portico Vine ARLFC.Sports Equipment for Young Volunteers
People Empowered CIC used a grant from Magic Little Grants to support a group of 20 children from Hindly Green Junior Volunteers by providing sports and games equipment so they can relax and have fun when they are not volunteering in the community.Activities to keep people moving to stave off the impact of Arthritis in St Helens
The funding was used to support three walking groups for men in their 40’s to 60’s, to fund weekly tag rugby sessions, walking football and to fund a weekly walking cricket group for people over 60 years old.Emergency Food packages for those in needs in St Helens
The funding provided emergency food packages and donations for over 130 people in St Helens over a six-month period, including, families on a low income, those accessing a cancer hospice, homeless women and young girls, families affected by poor mental well-being and isolation, and Pensioners.Weekly support sessions for women in supported accommodation for those who have survived abuse and/or family breakdown
Weekly support sessions were made available to 20 women including sessions delivered to improve chances in returning to employment, education, and volunteering. We built upon the connections that we have made in previous diversionary projects to continue delivery to challenged young people who were facing high levels of inequality and barriers to participation. The project worked with young people aged 10 to 16 years.Merseyside Police Cash Back Scheme – Workshops and mentoring for young people in the Sutton area
We worked with young people through weekly workshops and mentoring to help them improve their mental health, manage their anxiety and be better placed to manage the challenges in life. This helped them improve their behaviour in the community in school and at home.Diversionary Activities for over 300 young people and additional support through mentoring and workshops for 30 of the most challenging young people
Last year we were part of the UK Government’s Ministry of Justice £5 million investment into a Youth Justice Sport Fund to support 218 voluntary and community sector (VCS) organisations across England and Wales to conduct targeted work supporting vulnerable children considered to be at risk of being involved in crime and violence, using sport as a vehicle to address problem behaviour. The final policy briefing from this study highlighted the importance of work such as ours in using Child-first approaches seek to mitigate the harm that can arise from offending behaviours through adopting strength-based approaches which aim to develop pro-social identities and prevent offending and create safer communities with fewer victims.2021
Workshops and support sessions for homeless women living in supported accommodation, mentoring sessions for young people facing adversity
We were funded by Co-op members who identified us as their local cause, we delivered weekly support sessions and workshops for women who had been made homeless due to domestic violence and/or family breakdown. The workshops covered a variety of topics surrounding well-being, Confidence Building, Healthy Relationships, Drugs and Alcohol Awareness, Life-style Management, Conflict Resolution, and Managing Mental Health. Development sessions were also delivered covering budget shopping, healthy cooking, careers in Hair and Beauty, CV building, Interview Techniques, finding a Job/College Course. Physical Fitness sessions were also delivered including, Dance, Yoga, Keep-fit and circuit sessions at a local gym. Weekly mentoring sessions for 16 local young people aged 11 to 24 years were also part-funded by this fund. The sessions for young people facing challenging circumstances, poor mental health including anxiety, those excluded from school and engaged in and at risk of engaging in Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) and crime. The session led to improvements in school attendance and attainment, improved feelings of well-being and reduced engagement/risk of committing ASB and/or crime.Emergency Food Fund
Emergency food packages were supplied to over 150 people who were facing financial difficulties and food poverty. People Empowered CIC worked with 3 local community hubs including Vee’s Place in Prescot, Portico Vine ARLFC, and a local Women’s Refuge to identify individuals and families that were in difficulty and supplying them with food packages over a 6-month period. Recipients included, the elderly, individuals in end-of-life care at a local hospice, homeless people, individuals and families in need, individuals living with poor mental health, and families facing debt.Diversionary Sports Activities for young people in the socio-economically challenged ward of Thatto Heath
Friday Night Football diversionary activities were delivered for 6 months in an indoor training barn for up to 30 teenagers in a area with high levels of ASB and crime. Feedback from the young people and their parents was wholly positive. Workshops and diversionary activities were delivered after school in three schools in Parr (two primary schools for years 5 and 6 and a high school). Activities included after-school football, boxing, and fitness sessions. Workshops covered topics including, Reaching Your Potential, Goals and Aspirations, Conflict Resolution, Managing Social Media, Actions & Consequences, Anxiety and Positive Mental Health.2020 & Earlier
Dealing with Anxiety
A six-week programme to support year 6 students to deal with the anxieties linked to the death of a parent of one of their peers. The programme included identifying and managing stressful situations. Giving the children strategies to help them focus upon positivity and mindfulness to reduce and avoid anxiety and stress.Methodist Primary School transition to Senior School
A short project that worked with year 6 children to help them prepare for transition to senior school. The project dealt with relationships, conflict with peers and aspirations.Fully Funded Sports Camps for the children of Torus Housing Association residents.
School-holiday provision for up to 27 children per day, the sports camps helped the children socialise, developed fitness and skills in a range of traditional sports and games including, badminton, tennis, football rugby, athletics, dodgeball, rounders and tag. The children were provided with free places and healthy, nutritious meals, snacks and drinks. The project was funded by Torus Housing Association and run in conjunction with PTG Sport Camps and hosted at Thatto Heath Crusaders Rugby Club.Who we've worked with.
